The people, who provide help to people with some illness, disability, injuries, and mental instability at their home rather than some medical care center, are called home health aides. Home health aides also take care of kids and elderly people who need assistance about their personal care. With the increasing demand for home health aide, the number of people joining this field is also increasing.
Home Health Aides Courses, Requirements and Training
Although home health aides do not need special certification, the certified home health aides are preferred by home health aides companies and some employers. No high school diploma is required for home health aide courses. They only need a training which may enable them to work and help a patient in a home setting. Many home health aides get jobs only on the basis of their training in this field. But if they want to move further in the profession of medical care, they need to qualify some certification programs. Certification increases their chances of getting good jobs. They are hired and trained by home health aide agencies. The courses for home health aides include theory and practical experience. After learning theoretically they do internship. During internship they deal with many conditions and situations under the supervision of qualified doctors, nurses or aids. This experience enables them to treat and serve the patient alone at his home.
Many colleges provide the facility of home health aide certification and training. The qualification and skill requirements of these colleges vary from state to state. In some states it is necessary to do some additional courses before doing home health aide course such as nursing and CPR. Training courses offered by these colleges generally consist of two or three weeks training. What they learn during the training usually include:
- The maintenance and management of the patient’s house according to his requirements
- The knowledge about different foods and diets those are best for different type of patients.
- Skill to deal with emergency situations
- Knowledge and experience of using medical equipment needed in a particular disease
- Understanding patient’s medical as well as emotional needs
- Keeping them healthy by different exercises
- Mental and psychological help to keep them mentally stable
- Driving skills, so they can drive the patient to the hospital if the need arises
- Soft and compassionate behavior to treat the patient
Before starting the training the candidate must keep in mind that the requirements for this profession vary from state to state. His training may not be valid in some other state. The certification also has to be renewed after a specific period of time.
Many employers and home health aide agencies prefer to train their home health aides according to their needs and demands. They train them to perform certain duties. The duties of home health aides may include cleaning of house, cooking, and sometimes laundry is also included in their job. The home health aides’ training and experience count a lot when it comes to getting a valuable job.
